Before we begin, I should clear up a misunderstanding. Several readers of the first edition wrote in to complain that this book was not what they expected. They had been hoping for ruthless tips on manipulating colleagues and making their boss doubt their own memory.

I can only apologise. This is a book about gaslighting in its original and only proper sense: the lighting of gas lamps. And I believe it is the finest career path there is.
